Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
