The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
